Daphne Caruana Galizia was not a great person.
And I say this not because of the corruption scandals she brought to light.
Or because of her persistent perseverance for uncovering the truth.
I do not say this to justify the horrendous, despicable murder that occurred on Monday.
I say this because it is the truth. Daphne Caruana Galizia was not a saint and she never claimed to be one.
At times Daphne Caruana Galizia rose up to the peak of investigative journalism, blowing us away with fact after fact, detail after detail, post after post.
But at other times, she stooped down to sensationalist, classist, superficial and downright judgmental content.
Content that was often very emotionally charged.
She was clearly hurt.
She evidently took matters personally.
She obviously was not writing because she had to.
She was writing because she just HAD TO.
Because no one else would.
Was she perfect? No.
She cared enough to let her emotions get the better of her and this sometimes resulted in bitter, personal attacks.
Was she right to do this? Probably not. Did she have the right to do it? Damn right.
And she exercised this right to the full, essentially because she was so passionate about bringing to light what she knew no one else would.
She cared enough to put her career on the line.
She cared enough to put HER LIFE on the line.
And that is what she should be remembered for.
Daphne Caruana Galizia cared enough to speak the truth, even when it did offend.
And no one deserves to be murdered for being true to themselves.
Daphne Caruana Galiza, many people did not agree with a lot of what you wrote, especially when it came to personal attacks.
But the truth is you were honest, you spoke from the heart and you did not give two hoots whether people liked you or not.
You cared too much about being true to yourself and about exposing the truth.
And that – THAT is what we must remember.
You had NO FEAR.
And now you are DEAD.
And we are sorry.
Malta, Europe, the world is sorry.
We are sorry to live in a world where it is easier to silence a journalist than to investigate and uncover the truth.
RIP Daphne Caruana Galizia. Your assassination has left us all breathless, in shock and in a state of hopelessness. Our deepest condolences go out to your family and loved ones.
