By definition, motivation is the reason for people’s actions, desires, and needs. In my words, your driving force – what pushes you to keep going !
In the info-graphic I have mapped out 5 ways to FIND motivation, keeping it, is the secret and also the key! In every step we will reveal, make sure these are things you enjoy and/or are passionate about.
Do not do or follow something that is currently trending ‘just because’. This does not work. The level of enjoyment has to be there, incorporated with what benefits you will obtain, and most importantly the FEEL GOOD FACTOR attained after following these steps. Are you ready? Let’s go!
START YOUR DAY WITH GRATITUDE
Being thankful for what we have is something that most of us, including myself tend to dismiss and forget, or worse take for granted.
Gratitude is a must for living a life full of positive energy and motivation. It teaches us to say thanks for what we have, instead of being worked up about what we don’t.
It is a simple shift in focus, but when practiced daily, great changes will start happening.
Scenario – you get all worked up about the fact that you don’t have/live in the house of your dreams, thus you are only left with negative emotions and frustrations.
Conscious Change – you deliberately decide to start appreciating the place you live in, you look back and see how far you have come, you realise what it took you to be here and that some years back, being where you currently are, was actually a dream.
What do you do in the first 30 minutes after you wake up? Do you run to attend to your kids? Are you always in a rush, and down your coffee like a shooter on a Saturday night out? Or are you one who is in such a panic of always being late, that you end up forgetting about yourself altogether?
I don’t know about you, but this scenario makes me feel uneasy – just reading it makes me feel out of breath, hassled and stressed.
But did I hit home here? Do you relate? Hmm… let’s just stop for a minute and breathe, innnnnnn, and ouuuuuttttttt. Innnnnnnnnnn … and ouuuuuuuuuutttttt. There we go! Do we even let ourselves breathe during the day – do we have time to? We need to start practicing this consciously. Of course we do breathe, or else we wouldn’t be reading this would we. But my point is we need to make breathing part of our morning routine.
Be it Meditation, Yoga or going for a walk in nature – choose to start the day by allowing yourself to BREATHE.
DO IT FOR SOMEONE YOU LOVE
Us women are superstars at this – doing it for others. So might as well make use of this to boost our motivation.
When the reason or focus of what we are doing is someone else, everything changes. The magic shift happens, like when we chose to be grateful for what we HAVE and how we feel after breathing.
The aim of the game is different. In a world where us women tend to help everyone and everything, this might actually come in as the easiest of the steps suggested here.
Some women do it for their kids – they want to see them happy and want them to have the best life ever. One suggestion here to remember is – you cannot pour from an empty cup – so make sure you are happy yourself as well.
So, find your driving force – your why, then ask yourself, who is it that you are doing this for. Most probably it is not for yourself. And if it is, kudos to you!
FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS
Having a goal – an aim for something – is a motivator in itself.
It could be something material or an experience. When we want something BADLY, this gets us excited and when we reach that stage, everything looks and feels better. It’s like they say – eye on the prize – keep your eyes and mindset on what you want and never take them off.
Have things around the house that remind you of this goal – images on the fridge – images on your computer’s desktop. This will make the want for it increase and thus it will come true quicker and keep you focused.
For me, dreams are long term goals – I dream big – whereas goals are like stepping stones to get to the dream. Imagine a child, ask them what they want to be when they grow up. They would rarely reply with a job. Their reply is more likely to be something magical or fantasy-like.
That, right there, is the difference between goals and dreams: Dreams happen when the mind does not think, and we let ourselves soar into a feel-good state of fulfillment without inhibitions.
I am a person who exudes energy. When I use my brain and not my body I feel lethargic, exhausted and useless. My positive vibes leave the building and I am left feeling drained and depleted.
So I walk, run, do yoga, dance, dance, skip, do Zumba. I love them all and they make me smile. They put me in my happy place and I feel good again in an instant.
I encourage you to find something that you enjoy that makes you move – even if it is playing with your kids.
Let this activity be a weekly aim of yours and do it for 30 minutes 3 times a week. I promise that within a week, you will start feeling a positive shift happening and within a month the feel-good factor will kick in and you will start being attracted or positively ‘addicted’ to do this activity.
