If you are reading this, then you probably know which video I am referring to. You know, the one where a scared, petrified, traumatised woman who also happens to be naked is filmed whilst a group of male police officers are trying to contain her.
‘Oh but it is her fault’ I hear you say.
‘Why is she naked?’
‘Why is she shouting like that?’
‘Why is she in a garbage truck?’
‘It is a public space and we all have a right to judge her, ridicule her, film her, share images of her in this vulnerable state for all to see.’
Do we?
What if, at best, she had a bad night out, took some drugs voluntarily which led her to this state?
Or
What if, she was abused, raped and drugged by someone else?
What if she was your sister? Would the reason that led her to this state matter? Should it effect whether we have the right to share her images, judge and ridicule her?
If the news sites only wanted to report the incident they could have, without sharing the video!
It truly angers me that people are laughing at this woman.
What if she just lost her child?
What if she just lost her husband?
What if she just lost her mind?
Shouldn’t we be helping her instead of laughing at her?
Some of the comments are just disgusting.
We are all holier than the pope when we hear of people committing suicide. But when people are alive and clearly need help, we give them the cold shoulder and go as far as laughing at them, and even ridiculing them.
So my message is this. Do not share the video because by doing so you are doing a grave disservice to this woman, her family and humanity in general. Have a heart.
