Most of us, find ourselves multi-tasking like there’s a house on fire. We swiftly move from one task to another without even knowing what’s going on around us. We focus on our endless list of tasks, we go as fast as Olympic sprinter Bolt and, more often than not, we unfortunately miss out on some of the most delightfully delicious little moments that have the potential to make our day brighter.
Award winning author Nicholas Sparks writes ‘“Strange, what being forced to slow down could do to a person.” suggesting that we shouldn’t let life pass us by, reminding us that we should stop for just a minute or two during our busy day to gather our thoughts. Recommending to us, that tuning in and reminding ourselves that we are awesome, is equivalent to an energy booster we all so desperately crave. Well, dear Mr Sparks, you’re clearly not a mummy on a constant mission to find a perfect work-life balance now are you?
Although, truthfully, our dear friend Nik does have a point right? Deep down we know he’s on to something. However, realistically, do we have the luxury of slowing down? Most of you are probably shaking their head answering ‘certainly not’. Slowing down would mean that our domino empire would start to go down ever so quickly.
Ready to give going slow a shot?
Sometimes it’s time for a timeout – our own. Here are a couple of our favourite tips on how to take the speed down a notch. Entertain us and try out some of these simple suggestions. You might actually enjoy the results.
1) Digital Detox Sessions
Modern tech has made us available any time any where which is great yet finding time for a digital detox has its benefits. If everyone else’s urgency quickly becomes your own, set some digital rules. From time to time switch off, stop refreshing your social media all the time and eliminate all the unnecessary interruptions. Digital detox will allow your mind to rest.
2) Stop Setting Impossibly High Standards
Sometimes we’re our worst enemies – we set standards sky high for ourselves and to make it ever worse we fall in the comparing trap. It’s great to aim high and it’s even better if we’re a tad realistic and give ourselves a break. Next time you’re about to write your to do list, take a minute and remember that you’re an awesome mummy and you’re also human.
3) Get out of the house
Cleaning, cooking, homework time, grocery shopping, medical appointments and chores, will the list ever end? To top it off, if you’re a working mum you’re probably also trying to squeeze in some time to show your boss that you’re handling things too. Here’s an idea. Grab your kids and keys and get out of the house for some fresh air. A change of environment will work wonders and your kids will love it too. Dash out for a while and you’ll coming back feeling in charge and back to being top of your game.
4) Stop saying yes all the time
This is the ultimate challenge – it’s the toughest nut to crack. You clearly have enough on your plate so why do you keep nodding your head to every new task that is thrown on your plate? Delegate darling. Let your partner pitch in. If people offer help – take it.
Is slow your new luxury?
Let’s try and learn how to operate efficiently at a slower pace, let’s allow ourselves to take a minute, let’s train ourselves to breath and be mindful because we’re super stunning mums and we deserve to. Indulge in being slow, it really is the new luxury.
