Here’s a daily dinner game for families, loved ones and friends: ‘High, Low and Unexpected’! This game can take as little as a minute (although we’d hope it would take longer!) and is sure to make you grin, hug or even share a tear.
Wondering what the purpose of this game is? One word, this game is all about art of communication.
It’s all about giving each other time to share daily experiences, special moments, uncomfortable instances and more.
In a nutshell, it’s a fun way to communicate effectively, because let’s face it, there are times when although we’re living under the same roof we might not have a clue what our loved ones are going through.
Here’s how to play
Minimum of 2 players, maximum — as many participants as you want.
Start with ‘HIGH’ — each player must share a positive experience they have encountered during the day. Next, each participant must share the worst moment of the day, i.e the ‘LOW’. Now finally everyone’s favourite category ‘UNEXPECTED’ — in this final round each player must share an instance during the day which caught them off guard or surprised them.
It is important that during each round, each family member is given time to share their story. Don’t interrupt, judge or criticize, just listen.
6 reasons why you should play
#1 — This game will open a great communication channel with your kids and partner. Kids will have fun and learn loads too.
#2 — It gives you a golden opportunity to celebrate your children’s highs. Definitely a perfect excuse to give your kids a well deserved high-five.
#3 — Your young ones will be sharing experiences which might have been challenging, so this game is a great way to get to know about any challenges they may be going through and show them love, care and support.
#4 — Just like your kids, you’re sharing too! Through your shared experiences, your kids will start to realize that your day is also made up of highs, lows and unexpected curve balls. They’ll quickly start to realize how important it is to appreciate and cheer on the good times, acknowledge and address the bad and deal with the unexpected.
#5 — The fact that you’re sharing moments of your day, will make the people around the dinner table, more aware of what you’re going through too.
#6 — This game takes us back to the good old fashioned dinner-time discussion, so all family members are actually talking rather than playing with their tech devices.
One more thing
You can opt to play in this simple way or could even jazz it up. Print cards, customized HIGH, LOW, UNEXPECTED dice or come up with penalties for anyone who doesn’t answer one of the rounds! The ball is in your court.
We love this game because it’s family friendly, fun and has all the ingredients to become a daily dinner-time ritual.
Give this game your own twist and turn it into your very own, family tradition – your loved ones will become more close and connected than ever before. Happy playing.
